On April 20th, Italian researchers developed a biodegradable soft robot with 4D printing, which is shaped like a seed and can change its shape with environmental changes.
It is reported that 4D printing is the process of using 3D printing technology to create objects that can change their shape or properties in response to environmental factors such as light and temperature. Previously, this technology had been used to create self-assembled, programmable material technologies.
This technology was inspired by the seed structure of South African geraniums, whose shape changes with environmental humidity, leading researchers to create the first biomimetic and biodegradable seed robot.
In testing, the software robot explored soil samples and adjusted their shape to move through rough soil and cracks. It is very energy-efficient, able to lift objects around 100 times its weight, and provides a new method for monitoring the Earth.
Researchers say that the low-cost, simple design, and data collection capabilities of the new robot will be particularly useful in soil exploration and monitoring in remote areas, providing new research directions for developing low-cost instruments.
